Largely inspired by the pieces from the Valencia region, stylistically this pottery was the stepping stone between the Middle East and that of Italy. It was, in fact, a misnomer from the trade of the desirable pottery of this era and location that gave the "majolica" technique its name: a major trading port that the pottery passed through was Marjoca--and the reference stuck, even though the pottery was not actually made there.
